ROHM SiC MOSFETs provide high voltage impulse output in a compact package

HIOKI E.E. Corp. Impulse Winding Tester

Adoption Background

Hioki's impulse winding tester is a measurement instrument that can test for layer shorts (inductor deterioration) between windings that occur in the inductors (coils) of motors used in industrial and automotive equipment. Quantification of the response waveforms makes it possible to easily and accurately make pass/fail determinations. This allows accumulated data from each fault to be fed back to upstream processes to predict conditions that could lead to non-compliant winding and contribute to the prevention of future defects. In the development of the device, thyristors were initially considered for the output circuit of the impulse (momentary high voltage) generator block, but achieving the high withstand voltages and currents needed posed a challenge due to size constraints. Therefore, attention was focused on SiC MOSFETs due to their compact size and ability to handle large voltages and currents. ROHM SiC MOSFETs were proposed, which matched the specifications, after which a sample request was issued. The samples were provided just in time for evaluation, and the results were favorable, which led to their adoption.

Development Manager, HIOKI E.E. Corp.

Initially we considered thyristors, but since many impulse testers use thyristors, we opted for SiC MOSFETs to differentiate our product. ROHM SiC MOSFETs support high withstand voltages and currents while also contributing to circuit miniaturization. At the same time, the drive circuit can be simplified compared to thyristor designs, leading to a reduction in the number of components and man-hours.
